The Ultimate Storm Chaser | John 6:15-21
Series: I AM
I AM sermon-01
This Sunday we looked at a very familiar story of Jesus walking on the water. We discussed two very important ideas in this passage: Jesus is the 'I AM' and we can trust him no matter the circumstances. Even when a dangerous storm was coming to destroy the disciples on the boat, the reality of Jesus being the 'I AM' brought comfort to their fear. We must respond by accepting Jesus for who he is as the 'I AM', and we can have hope that he calms our fears.

    That Prophet | John 6:1-15
    Series: I AM
    I AM sermon-01
This Sunday in John we looked at the famous story of jesus feeding the 5,000. We learned that we can't really understand this story without taking all of chapter 5 to understand the importance of what Jesus is doing and his connection to Moses. When Jesus feeds the 5,000 the people ask if this is the prophet that has come into the world. We can't know what that means unless we know about the promise that God gave when he said that there would come another prophet like Moses. Moses gave food in the wilderness to Israel and now Jesus is giving food to the 5,000 by his own power. Jesus shows himself to be the better Moses.

We Believe in the Family | Part 1. God’s Design For Marriage
    Series: We Believe
    we believe sermon series
This week we heard what We Believe about God's design for the family and looked specifically at marriage. In our culture the Biblical idea of marriage is under attacked. Our culture tells that marriage is about what makes us happy. We learned from Ephesians 5 that marriage isn't about our happiness but about serving the Lord and having marriage be a picture of the gospel.

The Old Testament is All About Jesus | John 5:30-47
    Series: I AM
    I AM sermon-01
This Sunday we talked about who is a witness of the Lord Jesus Christ. In this part of John we see the Jews questioning Jesus' authority and Jesus tries to show them that their are others who are witnesses of him. He especially wants them to understand that the entire Old Testament bears witness to who he is as the Messiah. The Jews were missing the point of Moses' teaching and that all of the Scriptures point to the fulfillment of the Messiah. The New Testament is the place where we learn about Jesus being that Messiah.

    Series: We Believe
    we believe sermon series
This Sunday we talked about what We Believe about religious liberty. It may be a surprise to some but Baptists have historically always believed in religious liberty and always believed that their should be a separation between the church and the state. We have believed this because Scripture tells us that no government should impose a religion on to any person. All people must respond to the gospel individually and personally. This makes the proclaiming of the gospel extremely important to Christians, because people must hear the good news in order to respond personally to Jesus.

    Series: We Believe
    we believe sermon series
This Sunday we learned what We Believe about War and Peace. We examined what Paul says in Romans 12 about living peaceably among men. We understand that in a fallen world where evil dwells there are wars which become part of our history. Truly, there are just ways to go to war and to use that as a way to restrain evil in our world, but we also learn that we ought to be seeking peace with all people as much as possible. However, true peace won't come until the Prince of Peace returns to make all things new.

    Two Resurrections | John 5:16-29
    Series: I AM
    I AM sermon-01
This Sunday we studied more of John chapter 5 and saw how Jesus responded to the religious leaders who were mad at him for healing a man on the Sabbath. To make matters worse, Jesus equates himself with God and this makes the Jews want to kill him even more. They knew that for Jesus to say such a thing about himself was blasphemy if it wasn't true, but it also would mean that he would have divine authority. Moreover, Jesus talks about two kinds of resurrections, one to life and one to death. The reality is that if we trust who Jesus is and that he is indeed the Son of God, God in human form, then we can have confidence that we will have a resurrection to life.

This Sunday we learned what We Believe about the Christian and the Social Order. Christians need to know how to act like Christians in a culture that is non-Christian. We learn that we must be speaking the truth to our culture but that we are to be patient to a world which doesn't understand the truths of the gospel. We trust that God alone can enlighten someone's mind to understand and respond to the gospel.

Sin No More | John 5:9-15
    Series: I AM
    I AM sermon-01
This Sunday we learned more about the story of the sick men waiting to be healed. Here we see that Jesus is the one who can make anyone broken whole again by his power. We see that when the Jews criticized the man for carrying his bed on the Sabbath that legalism kills while grace heals. We must not expect people to have all their life together perfectly in order to be a part of this church. We also learned from this story that the very power that makes us whole is also the power to change us to be made more holy. Jesus commanded the man to sin no more, and he commands the same to us.

This week we talk about what We Believe about Cooperation. Cooperation is what we are calling gospel partnerships becuase it is the gospel that brings different kinds of churches and ministries together to partner towards God's mission. This is why it is such a great thing for us at Ralph Avenue to be a part of the Southern Baptist Convention because we are able to partner with like-minded churches for the advance of God's Kingdom.

Wilt Thou Be Made Whole? | John 5:1-9
    Series: I AM
    I AM sermon-01
This week we get to the 5th chapter of John. In this section of Scripture we learn about the sick man that Jesus heals. In all the healing sections of John we see the faith of those whom Jesus heals. This is a pattern for all those who come into contact with Jesus and his word, we must trust him completely. It is becuase of our sin and the sin which effects this world that we are broken people. We often do cry out at times and ask how can I be made whole? Luckily, the Bible points us to the only person who can make us whole, Jesus Christ.

    we believe sermon series
This Sunday we hit on what We Believe about Christian Education. Christians are always on a journey to learn more about God and his word, and with a culture that is increasingly hostile to God's word, Christians must be ready to pursue all they can learn about the Bible to engage the culture. Education is something Christian's should have a deep passion for, because truth changes us, the gospel truth has changed us and we must proclaim this truth to the entire world in a reasonable and intelligent way.

Believing Without Seeing | John 4:43-54
    Series: I AM
    I AM sermon-01
This Sunday we finish the fourth chapter of John by examining the truth of believing without seeing. We live in a culture where we can only believe that which is visible, that which can be seen. Yet Jesus calls us to trust him and his word without any promise of any visible sign or miracle. We learned that we are truly blessed if we have not seen and yet have still believed.

    we believe sermon series
This Sunday we went over what We Believe about Stewardship. We took a look at what it means for us to be stewards of things that God has given us, whether it is our money, time, or skills, everything we have comes from God as a gift. Truly everything we have is a gift from God and this is the motivation believers have to be cheerful givers and to give generously. We give because God gave to us, and most importantly, he gave us his son to die. It is the cross which puts into perspective our motivation and joy to give abundantly to God, the gospel mission, and to others.

    Series: We Believe
    we believe sermon series
This Sunday we learn what We Believe about Evangelism and Missions, or more specifically about the Great Commission. Instead of looking at Matthew 28, we turn to Matthew 22 where Jesus gives the parable of the wedding banquet. In this parable we see exactly the call we have as servants of the Lord to call all people to come to the wedding banquet of God. Servants who go and offer the invitation of wedding of not expected to have it easy because even the servants in the parable where killed by those they went to offer the invitation to. The Lord has called every Christian to the task of sharing the good news of Jesus Christ's death and resurrection with the lost.
